There are videos that illustrate a song and there are videos that expand on it. "Love Overflow," Protoje's new visual, is one of the latter — and it does it without having to force anything.

A day in Addis Ababa, on wheels

The video was filmed inAddis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Protoje spent the day skating around the city next to theAddis Girls Skate, a collective of young Ethiopians that has been gaining ground by building community and freedom through skateboarding in an environment still dominated by men. What you see in the video, according to Protoje himself, is unfiltered fun and freedom through the eyes of these girls, moving around their city, expressing themselves and simply enjoying being young.

It is no coincidence that skateboarding becomes the protagonist: more than the setting of the song, it ends up representing movement, possibility and young women claiming their own space.

Trees and what they represent

Within the theme there is a line that compares destruction with the lack of someone to plant something new — and for Protoje, those trees represent youth."The trees represent the youth,"says. His reflection goes beyond pointing out what is wrong in the world that new generations are inheriting: the important thing, he says, is to give them something better to inherit, and sometimes that starts with something as simple as giving a young person the freedom and encouragement to discover who they are.

That same idea is what he wanted to capture in Addis: a real freedom in those girls, which the camera tried to record without interfering too much.
