Some artists carry the word "roots" in their name, and others carry it in their journey. Queen Omega is the second kind — more than two decades singing conscious reggae, and now on a tour that brings her back to Latin America, with a stop in Colombia and, for the first time in a full band format, in Mexico.

Who is Queen Omega?

Born in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, in the early 80s, Queen Omega started singing calypso in local competitions from the age of nine and doing backing vocals for soca artists in her country. But her heart was always on the side of reggae and dancehall, and her connection to the teachings of His Majesty Haile Selassie I led her fully toward conscious reggae and Rastafari.

Her solo debut came in 2001 with the single "Warning", featuring the voices of Sizzla and Buju Banton, followed in 2002 by her self-titled debut album, recorded in London. From there she never stopped: "Away From Babylon" in 2004, the EP "Stars Align" in 2021 with a Stonebwoy feature, and her return in 2023 with "Freedom Legacy" after a decade without a studio album.

One of her biggest moments came with the dubplate "No Love" over the "Next Episode" riddim alongside Little Lion Sound — a track that racked up more than 120 million plays and even earned praise from Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. That makes it clear: Queen Omega is not a passing voice, she is one that endures.

Her importance in the genre

In a genre where female voices at the forefront of international roots reggae are still few, Queen Omega has paved the way. More than 20 years touring festivals like Rototom Sunsplash, Rebel Salute in Jamaica, Reggae Jam and SNWMF place her in the conversation of the most consistent artists in contemporary conscious reggae — and her Trinidadian origins, between calypso, soca and Rastafari, give her a voice that sounds unlike any other within the genre.

Nearly 25 years after her first single, Queen Omega still has her voice intact.

The Latin American tour

This time Queen Omega arrives with two different formats depending on the date: full band and sound system. In Colombia, her Bogotá stop is shaping up as a sound system night, sharing the bill with Mad Professor. In Mexico, on the other hand, she performs in full band format for the first time — and this is already her third visit to the country. Take note, family: this is no ordinary show, it is a version the Mexican scene has not seen yet.

Mexico City — Thursday, October 29, Queen Omega + Antidoping at Foro Veintiocho. Limited capacity.

Guadalajara — Friday, October 30, Queen Omega at C3 Rooftop, with Semáforo Reggae and more on the line up. Doors 9:30 PM.
